Parenting book series: Law

Fact
Our children need God's Law.   They do.  The law teaches us what sin is.   It's an important part of our lives as believers.   There is wisdom and conviction in the Law of God.

BUT
The law isn't the whole answer.

The law can tell us what sin is and can be a tool of conviction BUT it cannot ever deliver us from the sin that it points out to us.  It just can't.

Which shows us the essential nature of grace. Oh how we need grace, grace that shows us our need for the law is just as great as that of our children.

The answer:
Show the gospel to your children.  Preach it to them.  Talk about it with them.  Show them God in action in their every day lives.  Show them how much YOU need to be parented by God even as you parent them.

My thoughts
Ah... I read these words and they resonate in my being.   It's how I've been trying HARD to parent, but oh man.. it's hard to help a lad see both sides of the picture.  But then again it's hard for me to do that as well.  To see God's grace in equal measure to my need for his law.  So I suppose that is something I can work on with my boy as well.  To not be frivolous with the understanding grace and how it works with law.

What do you think?  How do you balance the need for the law with the essentials of grace?

Art Series: A Boy Named Giotto.

I want to thank Kirsten for coming to my rescue this week with another guest post with an art book.  I am SO pleased to have learned about this neat book.   Won't you join me in learning about it?

This is a wonderful treasure of a book that tells the life of Giotto and explains his drive to create art that led him to become one of the greatest painters of all time.

This is a book that tells most in its pictures and has little text, although the reading level is beyond the reach of little ones. It is a perfect book to give to older school-aged children and even teens. But I used it as a read aloud book so my children could listen, look at the glorious pictures, and discuss ideas that came up along the way.

You can pair this book with a number of other activities like painting with egg (as Giotto did), reading a short biography of his life, and perusing a book by Madeline L'Engle that is filled with his pictures telling the story of the life of Jesus.

So pick up "A Boy Named Giotto" at a bookstore or library today and open up a window to the past for your children.

Recipe: Banana Apricot Muffins

This is a recipe of my own creation!  Imagine that!   I looked at a few recipes for bananas and apricots and too many had ingredients I didn't have in the house.   So I decided to try my own hand at it and to my delight they turned out well. :)

Ingredients
2 eggs, beaten
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 cup apricots, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup oil

2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp baking soda

Directions
1. Mix first four ingredients together in a separate bowl.
2. Mix last four ingredients together in a separate bowl.
3. Make a well in the dry ingredients, then add the wet ingredients, stir until decently combined but not completely.
4. Makes 12 muffins cooked in a 350 oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

Our Thoughts:
Mine - YAY!!   They turned out!
Justin - They're good mom!
Hubby - Good muffins, good job hun.

Q is for Questions.. questions about Canada

I put the question to the crew.
What questions do you have about Canada.

They came up with quite a few!

Join me and Amanda as we walk through Blogging the Alphabet "Q", me with your questions and seeing what Amanda comes up.  :)

Have I ever seen a glacier (no) and where to go to see one.  Here's a list of Canadian glaciers!   :)

When we do have winter?
Generally from December to March, though the latest I've seen snow fly was mid-May and the earliest was in October.   Our last couple of winters have been downright pitiful and both my guys are getting annoyed!   One winter we had snow up past my head!  IT WAS WONDERFUL!!!   :)   We have four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.  Each with it's own beauty.

How does one pronounce Iqaluit

How about special holidays and celebrations there? My son got curious about that when he found out people in Canada don't have Thanksgiving in November like we do in America.

Canadians have thanksgiving at a reasonable time...not rushing Christmas!  :)  Check out Kym's post.
We also have Canada Day (July 1st) and various other statutory holidays
Holidays we do in Ontario: Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Family Day (February) not a mandatory day off though, Good Friday and Easter, Easter Monday. Civic Holiday in August, Labour Day and Thanksgiving (October), and Remembrance Day (November).

What is the political system like? is there a president?
No president, we elect a prime minister.  We have three main parties, the Conservatives, the Liberals and the New Democratic Party.   Currently the Liberals are in power (don't ask me what I think about that!).  :)   Currently some localities are testing a ranked ballot system for the next elections, this system only kicks in when the winner of an election wins by less than a certain percentage (can't recall what that is right now). It then takes into account the popular vote.   We do not vote on a regular schedule, there is a time limit to when the current government MUST call a vote, but there is no set schedule in place for when they can choose to call it.   As long a party is in power...more power to them.   Sucks at times but hey.. there it is.   For more information on how our government works check out this site.

How much of Canada is inhabitable?
This site is REALLY helpful in seeing the population densities of Canada.  I do hope you will go and look.   The image below comes from that page.  Current population of Canada (as of the 2015 Census) is 35.85 million.

Can we learn more about Quebecois music?
Honestly... haven't a clue!   :)  BUT I did find this video on Youtube.

Does pokemon go have any special pokemon you can only get in Canada?
Nope. :)
How about please explain the whole prime minister thing
How about you explain the whole president thing.. TRUMP....  REALLY?????:)

What part of Canada do you live in?
South Western Ontario, near London (not in England).

Do wives all over Canada not take their husband's last name or is that just QC?
Personal choices, and they vary by region.

Are there any foods unique to Canada?
Nanaimo bars...many people love them, me.. meh Too sweet UNLESS they are frozen, then YUM!!!
Poutine
Tourtiere (meat pie)
Maple syrup.  :)

What are some Canadian traditions?
Canada Day (Dominion Day) celebrated on July 1st.  Parades, picnics, fireworks.
Thanksgiving at the proper time in October (Americans are so mixed up).  :)
Family Day is kinda new and makes people ask questions.  It's a fun day though filled with tons of family activities in almost every part of Ontario.
I dunno though... we are quite similar to Americans but we LOVE snow (for the most part) and do a lot of winter activities, and if you don't like hockey there's something wrong with you.  (not really, we are pretty laid back and we'll apologize if we've offended you (or think that we have).  :)

What type of animals are indigenous to Canada that aren't in the US?
Polar bears.  Seriously LARGE bears.  Don't want to mess with them.
Canada Lynx
Moose
Beluga Whale
BigHorn Sheep
Canada Goose (though I know you see those down south as they migrate)
Beaver
Tailless frog
There's a tiny black and red snake found up north but I can't recall it's name.
Here's a video on the loon.

Do you have tea time, like the British, or do you do three meals a day like most Americans...or do you do something totally different?
Three meals a day plus snacks.  :)  At least in Ontario and travelling west.  Quebec... might be more French in it's outlook but I've never been there.  French people don't snack.

The relationship between Canada and the UK. What power does the Queen have in Canada? What power does the UK have in Canada? (so maybe you could explain the Lieutenant General to our American friends. And why we pronounce "Lieutenant" and other words the British way. LOL)
Oh heavens, I hardly know where to to begin. I think perhaps I should do a whole separate series on Canada eh?  :)  A BRIEF explanation.
Each province as a lieutenant general who is the nominal head of state for the province and acts as the go between.  We also have a federal lieutentant general who is the president of the senate and resides over the chamber.  Here he/she handles debate and how legislation moves through the chamber.
The queen is the official head of state, and comes to visit and honestly.. has nothing really to do with the running of our country.  We love her (really we do as our Queen and there remains a strong interest in the goings on of her family) but our day to day lives are unaffected by her.  :)

The British pronunciation of the French word "lieutenant" (as "lef-tenant") is used by the Canadian Armed Forces, but the American pronunciation of "loo-tenant" (which is closer to the original French pronunciation) is sometimes heard as well.  But really to be proper it's lef-tenant.

My daughter would like to know if you still call the police force in Canada constables.
Yes, we call them constable... what do you call your police officers??
We also have mounties...but not in my area. We have a regular police force since we live in Ontario.  But for instance we'd say "Constable Stewart" not officer .. though they do respond equally well to officer.  :)  For more about the RCMP (the mounties) see here. If you ever have a chance to see the mounties in action you should do so.  Seriously cool to see their mounted musical rides.  Saw them one year but can't find a picture right now.

How Yellowknife, Northwest Territory got its name.
The name Yellowknife comes from a Dene band, the Yellowknives, now long gone, who once lived on the islands in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake and carried knives with yellow copper blades  Cool eh?  :)

Do people really call Prince Edward Island PEI, like in the Anne books?
I call it PEI, as does everyone else I know.   The folks I know from out east call it that too, so I don't see why your children shouldn't.  :)  Call it as you will.. I hope to visit it one day.  I've been through the west, someday I'll go through the east. My mom and sister went out last year and they said it was simply marvellous.

If I missed anyone's questions.. SORRY, not intentional, just how life happens eh?

Review: (re) union

(re)union is a book written by Pastor Bruce Cavey.   It is a book that calls people to come to Jesus, to recognize that Jesus is Lord.
I've been reading bits and pieces of this book for the past month.   As I read it, I can see Pastor Cavey's deep desire for people to come into a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Pastor Cavey writes in an engaging manner, step by step spelling out what he wants to teach the reader.  He reaches out to the seeker, the saint and the sinner.  He wants, and you can tell throughout the book, to bring people into a closer relationship with Jesus.  He wants people very much to know that Jesus is Lord and what that all means.

His book is a call to people to come to faith, to see the Lord Jesus for who he is, by the evidence of what we have seen in the Bible.   To know that Jesus is Lord is the ONLY way to connect to God.

However, as I have read this book I find myself with a niggling case of concern riding in my heart.  Something, but I don't know quite what, isn't right with his theology.   It's like something is missing from the bigger picture but I can't quite put my finger on it.

As I have continued digging in, that feeling simply didn't go away.  I get the general impression he's trying to replace the evangelistic tools of the Roman way, the steps to peace with God and such like with his own version of them.

He would like people to start using what he considers a more thorough tool, one the speaks not only to our need for God but what God intends to do.

I suppose some of my reservations come from the "shut down religion" part of this pictorial.   I don't see God making a big point of this outside of his setting up his kingdom and drawing people to like him (saving us from our sin).

See Jesus for who he is.  See him as the Lord that he is.  Come to faith in him. Trust in his grace. If you take that pivotal part away with you...then this book will serve a good purpose.

Title: (re)union - the good news of Jesus for seekers, saints and sinners.

Book Synopsis:
Is it possible that over the centuries the church has altered the message of Christ? Has modern Christianity wrapped itself so tightly in a fragmented, inactive version of the gospel that the life-changing message of God has been smothered? Pastor Bruxy Cavey thinks the answer is yes. He speaks to a new generation interested in Jesus but embarrassed by Christians in his latest book, Reunion: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners.

Sacrifices and Protections

Ezekiel 46:1-18 is our lesson for today.  Last time we how the people and the princes of the land have responsibilities in regards to sacrifices.

I'm actually finding this interesting to learn.  I always thought that the priests handled everything, but God makes it clear here that the prince is take part in the Sabbath offerings, standing at the gate so that the priests can make their offering (burnt and peace).   The prince doesn't need to stay all day BUT the east gate that he stands near is to be kept open all day.

46 “Thus says the Lord God: The gate of the inner court that faces east shall be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened. The prince shall enter by the vestibule of the gate from outside, and shall take his stand by the post of the gate. The priests shall offer his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate. Then he shall go out, but the gate shall not be shut until evening........

Another interesting fact.  When the people come to the feasts, if they come in at one gate they must leave by the gate opposite.   One straight line from one gate to the next, with the prince accompanying them.
“When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed feasts, he who enters by the north gate to worship shall go out by the south gate, and he who enters by the south gate shall go out by the north gate: no one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered, but each shall go out straight ahead. 10 When they enter, the prince shall enter with them, and when they go out, he shall go out.

Verses 11-15 discuss the sacrifices.    The next verses talk about inheritances.  Any inheritance the prince leaves for his children needs to come out the land that is HIS, not the peoples, not the temples, just his.  If he makes the gift to a servant they only have until the year of liberty to use it and enjoy it, after that, it reverts back to the prince so that any offspring of the prince don't lose any of their inheritance.

16 “Thus says the Lord God: If the prince makes a gift to any of his sons as his inheritance, it shall belong to his sons. It is their property by inheritance. 17 But if he makes a gift out of his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his to the year of liberty. Then it shall revert to the prince; surely it is his inheritance — it shall belong to his sons. 18 The prince shall not take any of the inheritance of the people, thrusting them out of their property. He shall give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that none of my people shall be scattered from his property.”

I read these verses and I wonder about God's care for his people.
Assuring that the prince remembers the importance of the sacrifices.
I wonder why the people had to walk in the straight line from one gate to the other.  I wonder if God was just keeping things orderly, or if there was a reason behind it.
I kinda wonder if it's a foreshadowing of how we can't turn back to our old ways after we accept the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf.   Once we've "gone through that gate" there is no turning back.   God's call upon our heart is too strong for that.  Nothing can separate us from his love, we're his through and through.

The last verses have me feeling kinda sad and at the same time more aware of God's protection on our behalf.   Imagine your employer giving you a gift, and you know you can only have it for a short term... nothing long term... because whatever the employer has, has to be kept as an inheritance for his children.   Kind of a bummer to know you have to give it back, but at the same time an incentive to make good use of it and to keep it good shape as you know if will be going back to him!    At the same time it's good to see those protections in place for the future generation, so that you know that the land God gave the prince can't to wastefully given away and thereby affect the long-term needs of future generations.

No squandering to be done here!
Only protections offered.   I just find myself intrigued.
What about you?

Hymn Study: Agnes Dei

We sang this song in church this morning and I loved it.  Didn't sing all of it, mouthed the words as I have a sore throat (Courtesy of my son)... and I was reminded of how much I love this praise song of worship to our living Lord God.

This one was put together by Michael W. Smith, he has long been a favourite of mine for the music that he puts together.   So many songs of worship to God.

Figured you'd like to see Michael W. Smith rendition of this beautiful praise and worship song.

Lyrics

Alleluia
Alleluia
For the Lord God Almighty reigns

Alleluia
Alleluia
For the Lord God Almighty reigns

Alleluia
Holy
Holy are You Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb

You are holy
Holy are you Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb

Amen

Can't you just see it?
The Lord rejoicing in the praise and worship of his people?
Of his people pouring out their hearts before him?
Seeing God for who he is?

Yes I know, It's easy to get caught up on the music, but seriously, don't you just see God's people loving up on the Lord God who created them?   Who leads them every single day?

I do.
And it fills my heart with wonder.
Makes me see how much smaller I am than God.
And thankful for his love, protection and guidance throughout my life.

Canada Book: Canada My Country

Busy clearing out some book shelves and thought I'd share some of the books we've enjoyed over the years.   Canada My Country is a work book with stories.

Read a story or an article on some aspect of Canada, and then do a short worksheet.

Six separate units covering topics like Canada's Political Map, It's Physical Map, The Symbols of Canada, Our Government, the Freedoms of Canada and some outstanding Canadians.

Twenty seven lessons contained within 75 pages.

Geared for up to about grade four.  It's an easy book to pull out the information that you want, with permissions for a single teacher to replicate pages for her students as needed.

It's been a helpful book for us over the years.   If studying Canada with younger children this book will come in very helpful to you.  :)

The pages are easy to do and the information short enough

As you can see.. short selections, easy worksheets the fit the level of elementary aged children.

Published by Northwoods Press, written by Donna Ward.

The Prince's Portion

Ezekiel 45:7-25 is our lesson for today.  Last time we learned about designating part of what we have as for the Lord.  It's a reminder you know?

“And to the prince shall belong the land on both sides of the holy district and the property of the city, alongside the holy district and the property of the city, on the west and on the east, corresponding in length to one of the tribal portions, and extending from the western to the eastern boundary of the land. It is to be his property in Israel. And my princes shall no more oppress my people, but they shall let the house of Israel have the land according to their tribes.

As I read this passage there seems to be more than one prince talked about here.   There is "THE PRINCE" and then there are the princes.    THE PRINCE shall belong to the land surrounding the holy district and the city property.  This land shall be his.

BUT then there are the princes who are being called to no longer oppress the people of God.   It is to these princes that God directs his comments.

They are to put away violence and oppression.
They are to execute justice and righteousness.
They are no longer to evict the people.
They will have just balances.  The ephah and the bath, they will be of the same measure - one tenth of a homer.    With money being measured the same as well.

But I'm not sure if these princes are different or not.

“Thus says the Lord God: Enough, O princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression, and execute justice and righteousness. Cease your evictions of my people, declares the Lord God.
10 “You shall have just balances, a just ephah, and a just bath. 11 The ephah and the bath shall be of the same measure, the bath containing one tenth of a homer, and the ephah one tenth of a homer; the homer shall be the standard measure. 12 The shekel shall be twenty gerahs; twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels shall be your mina.

The princes are to receive offerings that are of the standard, measured weight.  This offering is to be given by all the people of the land.

13 “This is the offering that you shall make: one sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat, and one sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley, 14 and as the fixed portion of oil, measured in baths, one tenth of a bath from each cor (the cor, like the homer, contains ten baths). 15 And one sheep from every flock of two hundred, from the watering places of Israel for grain offering, burnt offering, and peace offerings, to make atonement for them, declares the Lord God.

16 All the people of the land shall be obliged to give this offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It shall be the prince's duty to furnish the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, at the feasts, the new moons, and the Sabbaths, all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel: he shall provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings, to make atonement on behalf of the house of Israel.

But do you see as you read?  Not only do the people have offerings to make, but the prince has offerings he needs to make as well.  The burnt, grain and drink offerings at the festivals etc, as well as the sin, grain, burnt and peace offerings in order to make atonement for the people.

18 “Thus says the Lord God: In the first month, on the first day of the month, you shall take a bull from the herd without blemish, and purify the sanctuary. 19 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and the posts of the gate of the inner court. 20 You shall do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who has sinned through error or ignorance; so you shall make atonement for the temple.
21 “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall celebrate the Feast of the Passover, and for seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten. 22 On that day the prince shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a young bull for a sin offering. 23 And on the seven days of the festival he shall provide as a burnt offering to the Lord seven young bulls and seven rams without blemish, on each of the seven days; and a male goat daily for a sin offering. 24 And he shall provide as a grain offering an ephah for each bull, an ephah for each ram, and a hin of oil to each ephah. 25 In the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month and for the seven days of the feast, he shall make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, and grain offerings, and for the oil.

And yet more sacrifices.
Do you see that they have be without any kind of blemish?
Perfect animals.
Meant to make the people right with God.
But so many were needed.  Grain, birds, cattle, sheep and more.'
I am left sitting here thinking, Jesus put an end to all that.
He was what the sacrifices pointed us toward.
Then he ended the need for them.

That's a true prince in action.

The Week of American Goldfinches in Colour

Check it out... my Spring Bed is out in good form this week.  Must like all the rain we've been having!  I just love walking up and seeing them all in bloom... just makes my heart smile!

Saturday:
I brought this cutie to London.   DaisyHawk in one of my favourite does, but it was time for her to find a new home.   She'll be living on a farm in St. Thomas.

Sunday:
Headed off to Kingsville so hubby could preach in the church of some friends.  Then had a lovely visit in the afternoon with them.  We went for a walk and my son was able to see Cactus growing in the wild in Ontario.

Monday:
We planned to go to London, but the lad developed a sore throat and was acting a touch troubled, so we called gramma who said "I'll come your way".  Once she arrived we headed out so we could get our taxes done, have a lunch out with hubby and so I could sell this cutie.
I bought a slingshot...
Tuesday:
The lad's sore throat has resolved itself into a cold.  It's a bleak rainy day.  We did some schooling with emphasis on "school should not cause tears" and chilled out in the afternoon doing laundry and watching movies.

Wednesday:
The lad was not feeling okay this morning yet, draggy and more apologetic than normal.  So he stayed home to do minimal schooling (just on-line stuff needed for reviews) and his reading.   I headed off to the

We had lunch together and chatted. I cleaned the fridge (being fairly brutal) and by the end we had a half empty fridge!!!

Finished the laundry from yesterday, did some blogging and the lad made me supper (eggs/bacon/cheese scramble).  Took pictures of my bunny babes and then decided to cut the lawn.  Not the smartest idea as now I'm really tired and sore.   BUT HEY!!   The lawn is done and now the rain can come again and it won't be a jungle when it stops again (apparently not until Monday!!!!).

Hubby pointed out that our Regular Pairs of American Goldfinch are back and ... are almost back to breeding plumage.

Thursday:
Today we did things differently than normal.  We made muffins, made the Millenium Falcon, built a hydraulic claw and made a simple drawing for art on Friday.   The lad did do his devotions and his Veritas Press History lesson.

Friday:
Dad had a funeral to preach so we dropped him off  as we headed off to visit a friend and do an art project.   Linoleum Printing.   It was rather fun to do!   Look!   I did a budgie!
