Review: 50 Natural Wonders to Blow Your Mind

Want to learn more about this wonderful world that we live in?   50 Natural Wonders to Blow your Mind is a book that will do that.  Pictures and words to delight and educate.  Learn more about this world than you thought you would.  :)
So let me tell you about this little gem.

Starting at the back of the book is a list of each of the continents (and one ocean) that lists each of the natural wonders discussed.   I like that feature!   Means if I am doing a continent study I can easily pull up the relevant pictures and stories.

Each natural wonder is a two page layout.
The writing, always appears on the left, and is informative with a sense of humour at times.   Like if you want to visit cave, go through all the trouble of trying to get there, only to discover you aren't allowed in.  :)   Providing just enough information to whet your appetite for more.
Each image portrayed shows some aspect of the wonder discussed.  Giving a glimpse into the beauty to be discovered.

It introduced me to Spotted Lake in British Columbia.

The book itself is divided into six sections
  • beach idyll
  • deep down
  • mountainous wonders
  • mystical and mythical
  • national parks
  • strange landscapes
My Thoughts:
This is an interesting small book geared to introduce people to natural wonders throughout the world.  I was disappointed it didn't feature more of the natural wonders of Canada.  :)   But that's the selfish national pride part of me talking.  I was delighted to find examples of natural wonders from all the different continents.   A small, but fascinating book.  I can easily see giving this to my lad next year and saying..pick one, learn more, give me a report.

Choices Have Consequences

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series.    Today Romans 1:1-11.

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.
He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

After reading Romans 1, and seeing God's wrath on those who choose not to follow him, this section has me stepping cautiously.

Art Book: Goats of Anarchy

I have to admit, I struggled about where to put this book in my line up.   It's not an art book per-say, but photography is a form of art and it's a big way that Leanne Lauricella spreads the word through her instagram account about her beloved goats.

This is a book of photographs, albeit very cute ones of goats.  I grew up with goats running around.  They are characters who seem to know just how to get into trouble, or to make themselves look so cute as to get out of the trouble they found themselves in.

The goats of anarchy are no different.

Come on.. Look at this face.  :)

This book is just filled with images of her goats.  :)

I have to admit, I did need to wrestle with even posting this book though.  As a person who raises and breeds rabbits I dislike people making assumptions, or making farmers look bad, or use inflammatory language in regards to other people who raise and breed animals.   I saw all this in the text of Goats of Anarchy.  I understand that people involved in rescue tend to see the worst of people, and it's really easy to make assumptions, or accusations, or to paint people with one paint brush.   Doesn't mean I don't HATE it.  "Cause I do.

That said.. I do know that there are nasty people out there.
Not everyone cares well for their critters, and some have more ability to allow suffering that I cannot abide.   For animals caught up in that nastiness.. I am SO GLAD there are rescues out there to say "hey baby goat... let me help you out".

So I can not whole heartedly recommend this book to you.  I don't know if you have the ability to weed through the rhetoric found in the pages, but if you are able to ignore or wade past the "language of rescuers" to enjoy the great photography of goats being well.. the silly, creative, smart critters they can be... then it's a fun book to look through.  :)

The first half of the book introduces us to her goats.   Sometimes she does a group shot, and then she'll do individual shots.  Not everyone is a goat though... into the mix are a couple of pigs, mini horse and donkey.

She gives a snippet of information about health needs and history, and snippets.

It was a fun little book to go through.   Some of her goats have been through a rough time and she's given them a better place to be, and that's a good thing.   Mind...if you go through it.. watch out for those goat smiles....they'll make you want to get one of your own for sure!  :)

Review: Amelia's Maze Adventure

 Amelia's Maze Adventure

Lonely Planet Kids.
approximately 9 x 11
ages: 8-12 years
pages: 128

Amelia's Maze Adventure is all about Amelia taking a trip around the world tracking down Lady Vivian Winthrop missing jewels.  Will Amelia ever find them?   She's on a whirl wind tour!

Don't you just love a book where you can learn interesting facts about the world (and the places in it) while having fun solving a puzzle, in this particular case MAZES.

The mazes vary in difficulty from level one to five. Most of the mazes are clearly marked.
I love the sheer variety of mazes found in this book, from the simple block ones that most of us are used to, to the shapes of coral like this one.

Interesting facts are learned from how camels can spit to how facts about Toyko.

The facts are never long or overwhelming, just enough to give you a taste, which of course, can lead to future exploration.
I love the innovative mazes : turtles, snakes, tunnels, Mount Rushmore, vines, alligators, zebras and more.

My thoughts:

This is a rather cool book to use. Well done mazes that help you develop your spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, problem solving abilities and more.  It's great to be able to complete a well done maze, and this book is full of them.   Go on.. go get it!   It'll keep the youth of your family amused as you travel about this summer, and they will be learning as they go.   It would also be a wonderful addition to a whirl-wind tour of the world as the mazes are discovered all over the world as Amelia hunts for the missing jewels.

God's Wrath, Choices Made, Natural Consequences

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series.

Today Romans 1:18-31.

Today we'll be closing off Chapter One, yesterday we saw how the righteous live by faith, today this section in the ESV is called God's wrath on unrighteousness.

Recipe: Lemon Loaf

A couple weeks back I had a yard sale, and as always, I cooked a few things just to see if I could sell them.  Some years this goes well and others years just kinda so-so, therefore I always make food that we like in our household.

I made Rhubarb pudding cake (which I love), Rhubarb Cake, and Lemon Loaf.

I have to admit, I am not very familiar with lemon loaf.. I made it once before YEARS ago for work luncheon I think.   I used this this recipe and modified slightly based on comments.

Ingredients:
  • 12 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 12 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp lemon extract
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 12 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 12 teaspoon salt
  • 1 lemon, rind of
Glaze
  • 1 lemon, juice of
  • 14 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp lemon extract
Directions:
  1. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until creamy.
  3. Blend in milk and 1/2 tsp lemon extract
  4. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt and lemon rind.
  5. Pour into batter.
  6. Stir to moisten.
  7. Scrape into greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.   DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP.  Just saying.
  8. Bake in 350f degree oven for 55 to 60 minutes.
  9. Cool in pan for 5 minutes.
  10. Remove to rack and while still hot, with a toothpick poke holes all over the top of the loaf, and spoon glaze evenly over.
  11. Cool.
What did we think?
Oops... forgot to grease the bottom on the one I held back.  Should have. :)  BUT the recipe tastes good, the lads had fun helping me to finish it off.

Y is for Yukon!

Hello!   Welcome to the second last week of Blogging through the alphabet!   Can you believe it?  Wow... it's been a whirl wind hasn't it?

This week Amanda and I bring you the letter Y!

Since I have been bringing you all things Canadian during this alphabetic tour, this week I'm going to talk with you about the Yukon!

Think Jack London, Call of the Wild, Snow, tundra, permafrost, Inuit, snow, sun, frontiersmen, cold winters, sled dogs and the northern lights.

Faith Lives On, Be Not Ashamed.

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series.    Today Romans 1:16-17.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

What then do these verses say today?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel.  Honestly, sometimes I have to wonder about that. I remember telling a lady about a good Christian Mystery I read once, one that weaved the bible into the mystery in a good manner. She asked me why I liked it so much and I found myself stumbling all over the place not wanting her to think I'm weird and yet wanting to say why I liked the book so much. Even now sometimes I find myself not wanting to say "I'm being kind because that's what God would have me do."   I shouldn't be like that.  I should have that boldness to say what's really important...and the end of it is.. GOD.  Seriously, if God weren't God working in my life I'd be such a lost soul.

But why shouldn't we be ashamed?
for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes
God is our salvation, but not only ours. It's for EVERYONE who believes.  Not just Joe Right or the jewish believers ... but for EVERYONE.

to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Admittedly... God came first to the Jewish nation.  The whole Old Testament is about that. He chose them.  His son was born within the Jewish nation.   His first friends and followers were Jewish people, he first was in the temple as a lad astounding the Jewish Teachers.  But from there the gospel spread.  Friends, families, neighbours, Roman Guards and more.  Seeing the power of God's salvation at work.  WHY?   Because his people were not ashamed to proclaim the gospel of God.

So if I truly want to see God's good news spread I MUST stop being ashamed of the gospel. It must be there and ready on my tongue when people ask me why I live as I do.  Why I teach my son as I do.   Why I'm kind or helpful or whatever.  It's all God and I mustn't be afraid to admit it..

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
I read these words and I find myself compelled to think about those last words.  The righteous shall live by faith.  It's true you know.   If it weren't for God and his righteousness I wouldn't be the person I am today.  The faith of my parents is revealed in me.  The faith of the righteous who have gone on before me is passed on through me.  My son's faith will be influenced by the faith of those who have gone on before him.

I wonder who else's faith will be influenced by my generation, and who will be influenced by my son's generation.  It moves on faith does...

Hymn Study: Come Thou Almighty King

I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters, and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: Hallelujah! For our Lord God almighty reigns. Revelation 19:6

Come Thou Almighty King is a hymn I am very familiar with, spelling out for us who God is.

Originally sung to the tune "God save the King" the national anthem for Britain.   Now obviously that wasn't going to work in Britain, so a new tune was developed to go along with these words.

This song has been around since about 1755, with different authors being ascribed to it but none proven.   Currently no one has a real certainty about who the author is.  For more on this, I suggest you visit here

Hymnologist Albert Bailey characterizes the hymn in this manner: “The hymn is a prayer for the presence of Christ to inspire a congregation in the hour of worship. God is addressed under three forms: as Father, the timeless “Ancient of Days” whose function is to rule (stanza 1); as Incarnate Word, the spirit of holiness whose function is to bless and conquer (stanza 2); as Comforter, the indwelling source of joy and power (stanza 3); and finally as the mystic combination, the Holy Trinity, in whose presence we shall spend an eternity of love and adoration (stanza 4).”  (source)

Lyrics:

1 Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy name to sing;
help us to praise.
Father, all glorious,
o'er all victorious,
come, and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

2 Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword;
scatter thy foes.
Let thine almighty aid
our sure defense be made,
our souls on thee be stayed;
thy wonders show.

3 Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power.

4 To thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be
hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore.

Review: The Pirate's Guide t' th' Grammar of Story

So  The Pirate's Guide t' th' Grammar of Story: A Creative Writing Curriculum is an interesting program to me.  My son initially fought me hard on it, but I've never sen him have so much fun with a grammar/story program ever, nor have I seen him change his opinion so radically.

I am impressed with the change.

So let me tell you more.

Review: The Beginner's Bible for Little Ones

The  Beginner's Bible for Little Ones is a board book put together for our little ones.  It's a sturdy board book. With lots of colourful pictures to delight the eye as they learn the basic facts about eight stories from the bible, selected from both the Old and New Testament.
The stories contained are:
  • The Beginning
  • Noah's Ark
  • The Mean Giant
  • Daniel and the Lions
  • An Angel Visits Mary
  • Baby Jesus is Born
  • Jesus Feeds Thousands
  • Jesus is Alive
Each story is four pages long with a short amount of text on each page under a picture.  I appreciated that the pictures weren't obviously Anglo-Saxon but made me think of a more middle eastern look.  Though I'm not sure the blond hair is really Middle Eastern.  :)

I liked that the biblical reference was provided, making it easy to start with the story in the book, and then use the bible to expand on the details.
 My Thoughts:
It's a nice little book for what it is... a way to introduce familiar bible stories to little children.  It does that.  It doesn't mention sin, though it mentions people doing bad things, among which is forgetting who God is.  God's protection of his people is made clear which is an important thing for littles to know.  God watches over us full well!

Field Trip: Harsco Science Center

At the end of May the family took a trip down to Pennsylvania.   One of the places we stopped at was the Harsco Science Center in Harrisburg.

While I won't say that visiting the science was worth the dollars spent, we did manage to have fun here.   Many of the exhibits were old, well worn or even broken, some things worked well.  The tornado exhibit was a hoot for both of us.

We had fun making cars, even if the method of making them was fairly set.

We then moved on to the shaker (for lack of a better word).  Build a mountain, put up your house and see how well it stands up.

We had fun racing against each other on a paired biking thing to see who could wear off their dinner quicker.  We did this several times, with the lad consistently beating his mother (except once when I cheated!)  (freely admitting that).  :)  Sorry for the blurry pic, it's hard to take a good pic while peddling a small bike.

We lifted our own body weight, which for two of the lifts was easy, but for one.. well... let's just say we both need to work on our upper arm strength.

Our greatest amount of time though was spent on the fan.  We changed blades, rotated spinners and just had fun playing around with it.

If we're in Harrisburg again we won't go to the Harsco Science Center again, but the activities we found entertained the lad quite nicely.

Reliance, Encouragement, Faith Proclaimed

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series.

Today Romans 1:8-15

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

Paul is thankful to his readers, the people in the Rome.
Why?
Their faith is proclaimed in all the world.

Can you imagine it?
Having an apostle the stature of Paul praising you because your FAITH is proclaimed.  People talking about your faith.

I hear that can I think...wow...that would be cool.  For people to see my faith and have THAT be what is talked about.  Imagine if that were the case for the church you were part of?   For the faith of your church to be a topic of discussion.. rather than the bickering or lack of service be the points mentioned.   YOUR FAITH!  Wow... that would just be very very cool.

Paul tells his listeners, that God knows the truth, he prays for them all the time, and he asks God to allow him to get to visit with them.   He wants so badly to see them so he can strengthen them with some spiritual gift.

The point being that they will mutually encourage each other through their faith.

Mutually encouraged by each other's faith.

Do you feel encourage by the faith seen in others?   Does your faith encourage others?
I have to admit, I have felt encouraged by others... but I don't know if my faith is a point of encouragement for others.   I so often just see my weakness and faltering... but it's something to strive for eh?   To build up my faith, to see God more clearly so I can then more clearly show him to others.

Paul wants his readers to know this.  He wants so badly to come to Rome, but so far has been prevented from doing so.   He has so many obligations ... to the Greeks, the barbarians, the wise, the foolish...he wants to preach God's word to them all.   He is so eager to preach God's word to them as well.

I can imagine the pressure Paul found himself under.  To have this strong compulsion to be out doing, and yet finding so many areas in which to be busy doing that he can't do it all.  He wants to go to Rome, but since he relies on God to help him find his way....he recognizes that God has not yet created a way for him to get there.

Ah ... that reliance on God eh?

To have that reliance.    Oh... so much to learn from Paul eh?   To see that reliance, to have that strong desire to preach the gospel to everyone, to see the faith in others and be encouraged by it.  It's a good thing that.  :)

Review: Following the Great Wall

Guess what I have for you today?   Another Unfolding Journeys book, this one on the Great Wall!  You may remember me talking about Rocky Mountains Explorer in the past.  This book does not disappoint as it dips us into the Following the Great Wall in China.

Following the Great Wall is an unfolding book, where the one side of the fold out is illustrated images about the great wall, with the opposite side giving factual details.

This is one of the facts that I particularly find helpful when talking about a subject with a group of students.  Being able to easily show them an image while I read the information from the backside of the image.
But the information is so readily linked that even if you are sitting just looking at the book you can easily flip from one side to the other to learn more.  The numbering system is just so helpful. With the illustration providing just enough information to peak one's interest.
My Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoy the unfolding journey books and this one is no exception.   To be able to see the whole picture and take in all the details, and then to gain more information in whatever images hits my fancy.. it's great!
